The teaching of basic skills is very important to us. We teach daily phonics, literacy and maths lessons across key stage one and two. We use the 'Letters and Sounds' scheme to teach phonics and supplement this with 'Jolly Phonics' resources. To support the teaching of reading we use Oxford Reading Tree predominantly but draw upon a wider range of books, such as Project X, Floppy's Phonics and Read, Write, Inc. to engage and support all learners. In 2020 we organised our texts into phonic phases to ensure that the children are able to rehearse sounds taught. Pupils are assessed on their phonic knowledge and this information is used to set the level of texts the children read at home. In Key Stage Two or when Phase 6 phonics have been completed this reverts back to colour banding.

We use the Maths Mastery approach to teaching maths using Maths Hub and White Rose planning and resources.

There are a wide range of topics and areas that are covered by all classes in addition to the core subjects. An overview of the topics is sent home for each group group at the start of the year.

Catch up Curriculum

This year (2020/21) we have altered our curriculum to ensure key objectives are covered to enable the 'catch up' curriculum. This involved reviewing the most important key objectives for the year and highlighting these as essential learning on our plans.

Topic sessions will allow maths, reading and writing to be embedded and consolidated during topic learning.  Missed learning will also be planned for during topic sessions e.g. 3D shape will be covered when designing a chocolate packaging design in Year 3 and 4.
